The problem is not that Blake Bortles is good or bad. The problem is that everything happens. And that is exactly what he has been doing for four years in which he has always inflated his statistics in the minutes of the garbage. Everything good that I will say about the template from here is marked by the whims of a guy who has decided to embody in real life the prototype of a college quarterback who caricatures in American comedies. King of the party, the flirt of turn and eternal consent. The drama, the terrible tragedy, and horror of this farce, is that the Jaguars need Bortles because they have nothing else.
What I do not believe is that they were looking for a quarterback in free agency as hard as they said … to end up signing Cody Kessler. Cody Kessler! To summarize the situation, now they have a quarterback with the physical and strength in the arm to play, but who do not care, nor want to learn how to do it, and another with a lot of desire, but without physical or arm. And as far as I know, the technique to combine two people in a single body has not yet been developed.
I think we all expected something more exciting. A Teddy Bridgewater if the flute sounded with his leg rebuilt, a Sam Bradford putting a candle to San Antonio to stay healthy or a Case Keenum that treasures shovel all the professionalism that Bortles lacks. All of them could compete for ownership with him; put him in the habit of taking the thing seriously or going partying elsewhere. But no. Cody Kessler !!! And do not think I do not like it. If Kessler is able to play like in 2016 in Cleveland, even without winning a single game, I prefer Broyles with his eyes closed. The problem is that, unlike the first three, no one believes that he is going to compete for the job; to be much more than a substitute without luxuries. As much as Tom Coughlin is a grumpy old man who does not marry anyone,it seems preposterous that he dares not even try to open a Kessler-Bortles debate, even if necessary. May God take us confessed.
And Bortles, always Bortles, will continue to be the weakest link in a team that is very good because it has a defense against hiccups, an insurmountable OL and a runner that looks like a Talgo Pendular. But nobody forgets that the AFC South last year was a lot with two teams without a quarterback and another without a head. So any. The Jaguars only needed to take off the Bradley ballast to go off like a pier desperate to regain their natural position.
So deceiving was 10-6 last year (with three defeats in the last five games), like 3-13 and 5-11 of the previous two. The Jaguars had then a template to dream of being in the postseason. Another thing is that in 2017 they could reach their limit with the Bortles always at the controls. And in 2018 I do not think they’re going to get a very different Bortles out on the field, no matter how much I still think I might even be a legitimate quarterback in the NFL if I was on the field with my head in the game instead of in the girl with whom he goes to dinner that night .
It’s a shame that Doug Marrone, an offensive-minded trainer, very serious, and that he has done very well in every place he has been, is again burdened by another quarterback’s fault, a great project that he had to lead long before. As coach of the Bills in 2013 and 2014, he managed to set the best template that Buffalo has had since the time of Marv Levy, but the lack of a quarterback of guarantees blew the project through the air. I hope that the same thing does not happen to him now because I think he’s probably the best coach under the radar of the current NFL.
ATTACK: Fournette ramming
I do not think that entrusting Leonard Fournette could be enough this time. I would even argue that the pick 4 season of the 2017 draft would have been as amazing as it is being said despite the fact that the Jags finished first in the land attack rankings. He missed three weeks with an injury and only surpassed 4 yards per attempt in four games, including all three of the playoffs. He left incredible details and was a decisive factor, but this year should improve. And I think he will. Another thing is that their ability to set defenses and force them to accumulate players in the box was key to the Jags. With 20.6 attempts per game, he made a Bortles less bad that got more percentage of complete and less interceptions than ever thanks to a field with very little traffic. When I think of the mischief that an elite quarterback could do thanks to a running back like Fournette, the tears come to my eyes. Behind Chris Ivory will no longer be there, but TJ Yeldon will continue, who is a luxury substitute.
A couple of years ago, Marqise Lee, Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson seemed the most promising young trio of receivers in the NFL. Now that society has dissolved after failing miserably. Allen Robinson missed most of the season due to injury and has left for Chicago, Hurns seems to have run out on almost nothing and left for Dallas. The tight end Marcedes Lewis (Packers) has also been fully amortized at 34 years old. That means they have had to rebuild the almost whole group of receivers. Lee will be joined by Donte Moncrief, the newcomer from Indianapolis, and DJ Chark, chosen in the second round of the draft. The squad also included Keelan Cole and Dede Westbrook who, especially the first one, performed well in their year of rookies.Overall, it is not a bad group, although it lacks the glamor of previous seasons, and it will require that the rookie Chark assume the role of receiver number one as soon as possible.
The offensive line was a luxury last year. The best in career yards and the third that allowed fewer sacks. This year should be even better. They repeat Cam Robinson (LT), Brandon Linder (C), AJ Cann (RG and the worst of the group) and Jermey Parnell (RT). Patrick Omameh, the left guard in 2017, has gone to the Giants and the Jags have improved the position with what may have been his best signing in free agency: Andrew Norwell. With his arrival, Fournette should find the inner freeways that he sometimes missed last year. Without forgetting that Robinson was rookie in 2017, he only allowed four sacks and will reach this much more mature season. Any quarterback would dream of having an offensive line like this … Bortles dreams of other more playful things.
DEFENSE: perhaps the best of the NFL
The best news for them is that they have not lost any major player from their spine in free agency. Of the eleven holders, perhaps only Paul Posluszny (MLB) who has retired, and Aaron Colvin, cornerback like in 2017, who will be replaced by DJ Hayden, the newcomer to the Lions. The loss in high school does not seem serious, let alone having one and two to Jalen Ramsey, perhaps the best cornerback of the current NFL and AJ Bouye, perhaps one of the best five. It’s that simple and that easy. The safeties, Barry Church (SS) and Tashaun Gipson (FS), do not reach those levels of excellence but they perform perfectly and, just in case, in the third round of the draft they chose Ronnie Harrison, who this year would have to have a lot of minutes It is surprising that in free agency they signed two more safeties, Cody Davis and Don Carey, to have the cover position. What will Todd Wash, the defensive coordinator, be up to?
All in all, the jewel of this defense full of diamonds is the line. Aces poker repeats with Yannick Ngakoue (DE-12 sacks), Abry Jones (DT-1 sack), Malik Jackson (DT-8 sacks) and Calais Campbell (DE-14.5 sacks). Marcell Dareus looked like a good understudy inside, but the Jags have given a twist over giving himself the pleasure of choosing Taven Bryan in the first round, a tackle that will probably take away from Jones immediately. If this line was already rated as the best in the current NFL, I could fight to deserve to enter the debate of the best of all time.
The party continues with the linebackers. Telvin Smith and Myles Jack are a tremendous outdoor pair that added 142 tackles in 2017. The withdrawal of Posluszny is not as serious as it seems. This year he was going to be a free agent and they already expected that he would not remain on the team. Blair Brown was working all year rookie to be able to relieve him with guarantees, although it is surprising that the Jags did not invest more in the position. There is practically no bench and elect Leon Jacobs in seventh round does not seem enough.
The Jacksonville defense was the second with the fewest yards allowed and also the second in points allowed just behind the Minnesota Vikings. In addition, the second with more sacks behind Pittsburgh and the second with more interceptions behind Baltimore. And there is no reason to think that I can not repeat similar figures in 2018.
The Jaguars are a quarterback to be the AFC’s top seed and a ‘no quarterback’ to hit a memorable whistle. Last year they not only defended, they were also incredibly practical in attack to finish as the fifth team with the most points scored. But they seem like unreal figures that do not tell the truth about what that attack was, always with the asterisk of a Bortles who tried to adopt a new profile as a safe player in which he does not fit and who never managed to get rid of his foolhardy spirit. This year they should remain favorites and look like the most powerful team in the AFC South no matter how much they improve Houston and Titans and even if Luck returns to Indianapolis. His schedule is not simple, but the bye in 9 and five of the first eight home games should help them catch a run.I do not think they will improve on the 10-6 of 2017, they will fight the division against the Texans until the last day … but they will follow a quarterback to be an aspiring ring unless Bortles stops being himself.
