Sometimes it can be hard to get excited for a preseason game, but we have two very clear reasons to watch the game:
Baker Mayfield and Saquon Barkley.
The first, recruited at No. 1 overall by the Browns, was one of the most efficient college quarterbacks of all time. There are some polarizing opinions about him due to some controversial moments in Oklahoma, but nonetheless he is an exciting talent.
That said, it looks like the season will start as a backup for Tyrod Taylor, whom the Browns acquired from Buffalo in an exchange this offseason.
“The best long-term thing is obvious, it’s Baker, ” head coach Hue Jackson said . “But we also signed Tyrod for a reason, to enter and be our owner.”
There is a possibility that we may not see Mayfield very much this season, which means that the preseason may be the best opportunity to monitor his progress early. However, it is not clear how much he will play on Thursday night.
As for Barkley, you do not take a second runner in the draft without the intention of making him your workhorse, and that’s exactly what the Giants plan to do. Once again, there are many energetic takes on whether or not to use such a good selection in this position was the right move, but Barkley is a potential generational talent. It will be very fun to see what you can do in this offensive.
Of course, Mayfield and Barkley are not the only attractions for the preseason game on Thursday night. The Browns, fresh from a historic season of 0-16, have a roster completely renovated with the additions of players like Taylor, Jarvis Landry and Carlos Hyde. The Giants also have some new veterans, such as Jonathan Stewart and Nate Solder. And then you also have more rookies to watch (Denzel Ward for the Browns, Lorenzo Carter for the Giants), as well as a series of important positional battles to analyze.
Oh, and if you’re the kind of monster that likes to bet on pre-season games, the G-Men are the favorites by 2.5 .
